Disclaimer: I wasn’t going to share this info, and was going to pretend like it didn’t happen. Why? Because it’s embarrassing, I’m supposed to know what I’m doing, and I wanted to pretend like I had it all down. So why did I decide to share? This is simple. I may have messed up in the past, but now I’m wiser. If I can help you avoid making the same mistakes I made, then disclosing this info is 100% worth it!
As a fitness pro I’m supposed to have all of the answers. When I spend four months traveling in Southeast Asia I’m supposed to maintain my fitness if not lose a few pounds, eat healthy all the time, turn down drinks, and get eight hours of sleep each night.
Well guess what? That did NOT happen.
Roll back that clock…
So let’s roll back the clock to about a year ago. Happy little me was gearing up for the trip of a lifetime; four months in Thailand! At this point I had just launched my line of resistance bands, and was looking forward to kicking some fitness ass while on the road.
Who knew what I was going to encounter! Would I have gym access everywhere, or would I be left to my own devices? Would I be able to find healthy dining options, “excuse me, may I please have some grilled chicken breast, steamed broccoli, and brown rice?”, or would I be left with a bowl full of noodles and delicious peanut sauce on a regular basis?
I didn’t really know the answers to these questions, but I thought that armed with my handy dandy resistance bands that I’d be able to conquer any situation.
Oh how the naive me thought that I’d be immune to the effects of traveling!
I remember my first night in Bangkok. I was incredibly jet lagged, ready for a nap, some delicious street food, and stoked to put my travel fitness knowledge to the test. I was going to crush my fitness goals, and show back up in the States lean, mean, and ready for action.
I can even remember sitting on the hotel bed writing my first “Hey guys, I’m in Thailand” blog post complete with a hotel room workout…that I had just done btw. Thailand was my oyster, and man was I going to rock it!
Fast forward four months…
Four months later, where was I??? Well, you guessed it…20 pounds heavier, and looking for a pair of jeans to fit my ever expanding butt in a country where most of the women are the same size of the sixth grade version of myself. If I never hear, “Sorry, you’re too big for this store” again I will die happy!
As you can imagine, this was a depressing state to be in. I was embarrassed about how much weight I gained. I’m the fitness pro right? I was the one with the plan, and the knowledge to stay lean while traveling. Then what was my problem, and why was I going home 20 pounds heavier than when I arrived?
The answer to this question is not an easy one. It’s multifaceted and involves both body and mind.
Over the next few weeks I’m going to go into detail about the mistakes I made in Thailand.
- Disruption of our habit loop while on vacation
- Best intension workouts
- Eating with reckless abandon while on vacation aka vacay eating mode
I hope that with this info out in the open for everyone to see that you will be able to avoid my fate. My goal is for you to be able to fly home comfortably in the same pair of jeans you arrived in, and for you to feel just as great, if not better than when you left for vacation.
Stay tuned for gory details, total honesty, a little humor, and hopefully lots of useful info!
